Program Overview
- Matt Covey, our University Librarian, will review recent updates to NIH publishing and public access requirements, including compliance expectations for investigators and research staff.
- Our guest speaker, Dave Hansen, Executive Director of Authors Alliance (please see his bio below), will discuss authors’ rights in the evolving Open Access environment, including tools and resources available to you, and techniques to negotiate with the publishers, such as amending the publishing agreement.
This session aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and strategies needed to comply with new NIH mandates and to make informed decisions about scholarly publishing.
Dave Hansen is Executive Director of Authors Alliance, a nonprofit that supports authors who want to see their work widely disseminated to benefit the public. In that role, he advocates for laws and policies that support open access to research. This past year, he led efforts with the Authors Alliance Scholarly Publishing Legal Fellow, Eric Harbeson, to publish guidance on the legal dimensions of new Federal Public Access Policies. Before joining the Authors Alliance, Dave was an Associate University Librarian and Lead for Copyright & Information Policy at Duke University Libraries, and has testified before Congress, the U.S. Copyright Office, and the USPTO on issues affecting academic authors and universities. He received his JD and MSLS from UNC-Chapel Hill.
